The Member State Committee (MSC) of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has agreed on four Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) to be included in the January 2017 Candidate List update.

These substances, and why they were proposed, are:

  • 4,4′-isopropylidenediphenol (bisphenol A)
    • Proposed due to its toxic for reproduction properties
  • nonadecafluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) and its sodium and ammonium salts
    • Proposed due to its toxic for reproduction properties, and persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic properties
  • 4-heptylphenol, branched and linear (4-HPbl)
    • Proposed due to endocrine-disrupting properties for the environment
  • 4-tert-pentylphenol (PTAP)
    • Proposed due to endocrine-disrupting properties for the environment

An additional two substances proposed for consideration did not receive unanimous approval by the MSC. The ECHA will submit the MSC opinions on these substances to the European Commission for an additional three month consultation period. These substances are:

  • 4-tert-butylphenol (PTBP) – Scientific evidence points to this substance as an endocrine disruptor.
  • benzene-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid 1,2-anhydride(trimellitic anhydride, TMA) – Scientific evidence indicates this substance is a respiratory sensitizer.

The SVHC Candidate List is historically updated in December of each year. To view the entire ECHA Candidate List, click here.

Updates to the Candidate List means companies producing and importing articles containing these substances face additional requirements under the REACH Regulation. Assent Compliance helps companies with their restricted substance requirements to ensure they remain compliant with restricted substance regulations like REACH.
